Module overview
This training module on “Planning Fundamentals” equips participants with a comprehensive understanding of the planning process. It enables them to define the scope of plans and strategies effectively. Participants will explore various tools and techniques to support efficient planning and will delve into the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle for continuous improvement.
The module also covers the emissions reduction hierarchy, including strategies to Avoid, Reduce, Switch, and Offset emissions. Additionally, learners will gain insights into conducting energy audits and understanding carbon footprints, applying these concepts within the planning cycle for more sustainable outcomes.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Understand the UN SDGs.
- Understand the planning process.
- Be able to define the scope of plans and strategies.
- Understand the tools and techniques available to support effective planning.
- Understand the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.
- Understand the emissions reduction hierarchy: Avoid, Reduce, Switch, Offset.
- Be able to understand energy audits and carbon footprints and how they can be used in the planning cycle.

- Each lesson is an important part of this module, it is recommended you minimise distractions while viewing the tutorial video.
- This module includes several short gateway quizzes that need to be passed for progression.
- Once you have completed all lessons, you will have access to a practice examination to help prepare you for the assessment examination.
- There is no limit on the number of times you can access the practice examination, we recommend you repeat the exercise until you have achieved at least 80%.

- Completing this module doesn’t qualify you for the credential and badge. However, it is your best preparation for exam success.

Certification requirements
You will achieve your full Certified Professional in Energy and/or Certified Professional in Carbon certification after you have:
- Received all of the required badges.
- Successfully completed an experience assessment.
- Accepted our Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct and our Disciplinary procedures.
- Registered for the CEP Certification Scheme.
