Since joining The University of Auckland in 1980, Denis has implemented significant energy saving measures across several campuses. In 1996 his position became formalised as Energy Manager, one of the first full-time roles of this type in NZ. Multi-million-dollar savings were achieved when total energy consumption reduced by 40% and water by 72% per EFTS, in spite of greatly extended operating hours and the proliferation of desk-top computing.
Denis’ award for Outstanding Energy Manager in 2000 recognised his contribution and passion for analysis of water and energy consumption in buildings and provided the University with a platform for a sustainable future following his retirement in 2016.
