Commercial Building Energy Specialist in Lighting (NZS 20086)

Learn how to assess, design and deliver compliant, energy-efficient and high quality lighting solutions

Gain an in-depth understanding of lighting technologies, applications, regulations and energy performance in and outside commercial buildings. Delivered online by industry experts, the course combines technical knowledge with practical applications to help you design, assess and implement energy-efficient lighting solutions.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to evaluate lighting systems, apply adaptive design techniques, ensure compliance with standards and deliver effective retrofits that save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

Dates: 18 & 20 August 2026 (Tue & Thur)
Times: 9.00am–4:00pm daily (NZDT) including breaks
CPD: 12 points (CEP framework) includes 2 hours for Worked Example Sessions
Mode: Live online

  • Understand the roles, responsibilities and competencies of an energy auditor
  • Identify key stakeholders and manage audit engagement effectively
  • Plan and deliver an energy audit step by step
  • Evaluate the relationship between energy savings and carbon reduction
  • Collect, analyse and report audit data with confidence

Who should attend?

This course is designed for professionals with prior experience in energy auditing or related fields who want to strengthen their technical capability and practical delivery skills.

Recommended prior knowledge

You’ll get the most value from this course if you have:

  • A working knowledge of energy, thermodynamics and basic physics
  • Familiarity with electrical systems (circuits, power factor)
  • Understanding of energy systems (e.g. HVAC, lighting) and heat transfer
  • Awareness of sustainability principles and energy impacts
  • Basic financial analysis skills (e.g. cost–benefit, payback periods)
  • Experience using technical tools, diagrams and spreadsheet analysis

Recommended preparation

To maximise your learning, we recommend access to the AS/NZS 3598:2014 Energy Audits standard:

  • Part 1: Commercial Buildings (people-driven)
  • Part 2: Industrial and related activities (process-driven)
  • Part 3: Transport-related activities (vehicle-driven)
