CEP Conference 2026 Speaker Russell Dyer

Decarbonising Cement: Golden Bay’s Journey to High-Rate Alternative Fuel Substitution

We’re looking forward to hearing from Russell Dyer, Energy and ARF Manager at Golden Bay Cement, on Day 2 (27 May) of the CEP Conference 2026 in Hamilton.

Russell will share a compelling case study on Golden Bay’s 20-year journey to drive energy efficiency and significantly reduce emissions at the Whangārei cement plant.

With more than 30 years at Golden Bay, Russell has played a key role in advancing energy efficiency and pioneering the use of alternative fuels – including wood waste, refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and tyres – while continuing the work to eliminate coal use altogether.

It’s a powerful example of long-term innovation and practical decarbonisation in a hard-to-abate industry.

Our 26-27 May 2026 Conference enjoyed record attendance and presented an even broader and deeper programme than previous years. A few controversial topics (including nuclear power and the proposed LNG terminal) provoked much discussion, while delegates also enjoyed depth sessions on bioenergy, efficiency, electrification and local government. According to those who came, it was the best two days of learning and networking of the year.

The need to address climate change has never been greater. As we continue to head towards critical dates such as 2030 and 2050, it seems the actions we’ll need to take to curb warming are becoming more pronounced as well as more urgent. Almost every day, we see examples of the impact of warming temperatures from around the world, whether it be rising sea levels, melting ice, droughts, floods or hurricanes. Of course, New Zealand is not immune, as we have seen.

CEP Conference 2020

The easiest, most cost effective and judicious next step in achieving lower emissions is to learn what can be done and how to do it. That’s what the CEP conference is for and the 2020 programme will be focused on enabling delegates move their organisations to lower emissions.

CEP Conference 2022

2022 was the year we gave it some jandal on accelerating decarbonisation. Rotorua was the place and picking up the pace is the theme. 2022 saw New Zealand with high COVID vaccination rates, freedoms to move about, a real appetite to get back to business after the enormous disruption of the last couple of years and, most importantly, a priority focus on decarbonising.
