Global authority on carbon markets to speak at CEP conference

Chair of the Integrity Council for Voluntary Carbon Markets (ICVCM), Annette Nazareth, will be delivering a Keynote address to the CEP Conference in May.

Announcing the Keynote, Dr Mike Hopkins of CEP said: ”Greenwashing, green sheen, environmental disinformation, call it what you will, barely a day goes by without a news story on the state of carbon markets, offset integrity and how offsets are being used. We desperately need robust, international standards for voluntary carbon markets and the ICVCM is the leader and peak body in driving integrity. It’s a real coup for us to have Annette address the conference and her session will be a must-see for everyone wanting to understand greenwashing and what’s being done about it.”

Voluntary carbon markets have come under a lot of pressure in recent months. Companies are being called out for using worthless carbon offsets and providers are under intense scrutiny to make sure their products are both genuine and robust. Confidence in the market has plummeted and needs to be restored if voluntary markets are to play a part in achieving net zero targets.

The ICVCM emerged from the Taskforce on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets, initially established by Mark Carney when he was UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance. Its purpose is to act as an independent governance body for the voluntary carbon market and to set and enforce a definitive global threshold so high-quality carbon credits efficiently mobilise finance towards urgent mitigation and climate resilient development.

Ms Nazareth will be talking about ICVCM’s latest work and initiatives to bring reliable, valuable and credible offsets to the market, and what that will mean for New Zealand businesses who are looking to use offsetting to cover some of those hard to abate emissions.

The CEP conference is being held at the Christchurch Town Hall on 28th and 29th May. Registrations are open and discounts are available for members of CEP, BANZ (Bioenergy Association) and the YEPN (Young Energy Professional Network).elivering a Keynote address to the CEP Conference in May.

The coolest place to be at the end of May 2024 will be the Christchurch Town Hall. That’s when the experts, influencers and decision makers that will commission, design and deliver the projects that will take us to our 2030 and 2050 targets will be gathering in one place at the same time. It’s the best opportunity of the year to come together, exchange ideas and learn from each other, all in a relaxed and cool environment.

CEP Conference 2022

2022 was the year we gave it some jandal on accelerating decarbonisation. Rotorua was the place and picking up the pace is the theme. 2022 saw New Zealand with high COVID vaccination rates, freedoms to move about, a real appetite to get back to business after the enormous disruption of the last couple of years and, most importantly, a priority focus on decarbonising.

CEP Conference 2025

The need to address climate change has never been greater. As we continue to head towards critical dates such as 2030 and 2050, it seems the actions we’ll need to take to curb warming are becoming more pronounced as well as more urgent. Almost every day, we see examples of the impact of warming temperatures from around the world, whether it be rising sea levels, melting ice, droughts, floods or hurricanes. Of course, New Zealand is not immune, as we have seen.
