Meet the trainers:

Bryan King

Managing Director -Strategic Lighting Partners + Executive Director – Lighting Council NZ

Bryan has a four decade history of leadership and governance positions in lighting product design, manufacturing and lighting consultancy businesses for the professional lighting and local government sectors.

He is chair of the Standards New Zealand lighting energy committee, a member of four Standards Australia committees, New Zealand Head of Delegation of the international IEC lighting committee, and a member of the ISO lighting committee. He is convenor of the IEC environmental working group for lighting and is also the New Zealand representative member of the Global Lighting Association.

Bryan was the founding chair of Lighting Council New Zealand and is currently its Executive Director. As managing director of lighting consultancy Strategic Lighting Partners, Bryan has undertaken energy efficiency consultancy assignments for the New Zealand and Australian governments and many New Zealand and Australian councils. He has also delivered lighting energy and environmental consultancy for the World Bank on development projects in West Africa.

In 2022 Bryan received the International Electrotechnical Commission Geneva ‘1906’ Award for exceptional achievement in standardisation for lighting.

Godfrey Bridger

Founding Managing Director – Strategic Lighting Partners Ltd

Godfrey was the founding managing director of Strategic Lighting Partners Ltd with directors Bryan King (now MD) and Crystal Beavis for over 12 years. 

The consultancy began with SLP’s investigation and analysis of street lighting in NZ compared to overseas. SLP then conducted advocacy and consultancy projects for NZ to change over to LED. The programme included two conferences held by SLP in NZ and two others in Australia in conjunction with IPWEA and Australia’s then-named Department of Industry Science and Resources (DISER).

This resulted in NZ’s conversion to LED street lighting well in advance of Australia with the then Minister of Transport, Hon Simon Bridges, announcing higher transport subsidies for LED street lighting at one of SLP’s conferences 10 years ago. SLP has completed many projects since then, including a programme of commercial lighting assessment for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

Godfrey has led a team of 50 scientists and engineers in a Crown Research Institute, been the Chief Executive of EECA, a board director of Mercury Energy (then the largest combined lines company and generator) and an elected member of the Auckland Regional Services Trust which appointed directors to – and owned – the Ports of Auckland, Watercare, and other companies which were the largest organisations of their type in NZ at the time.
