He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring unit has an opportunity for an Environmental Specialist, Field Hydrology to join the Hydrology and Environmental Data Management team.

If you are passionate about Auckland’s environment and are looking to further your scientific and field monitoring skills, this would be a fantastic role for you!

Based in Auckland CBD, but working across the Auckland region, you will help deliver their core hydrological monitoring programmes. The role is primarily field-based and will involve monitoring of rainfall, river flows, groundwater levels and other environmental parameters using specialist scientific equipment.

On any given day, you could be:

  • installing monitoring equipment and low-voltage electrical work
  • entering streams to gauge flows
  • surveying
  • maintaining sites for quality data collection
  • managing operational logistics
  • processing hydrological data according to National Environmental Monitoring Standards

You will have on-call responsibilities and the potential to assist Auckland Emergency Management/Civil Defence with information logistics during extreme events. You will also have the opportunity to support other programmes like water quality, coastal processes, marine ecology and terrestrial biodiversity.
