Module overview
This self-directed online training module on “Efficiency First” covers the reasons why it is important to organise energy and decarbonisation projects in a specific way to optimise the overall impact and minimise overall costs.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, you should be able to:
- Understand energy efficiency in the global context.
- Understand energy efficiency in the local context.
- Understand why efficiency projects should generally be implemented first.
- Solidify why efficiency comes first and marginal abatement cost introduction.
- Understand efficiency and demand reduction and be aware of some common examples of each.
- Understand loads and equipment sizing.
- Be able to employ the ‘start at the end’ strategy to reduce demands and have a high level understand of systems level thinking and optimisation.
- Understand the upstream impacts of reducing demands and equipment sizes specific to electricity infrastructure.
- Understand what a hybrid system is and common hybrid setups.
- Be aware of the risk of efficiency or investments locking-in a technology or sub-optimal solution.
- Have a memorable case study at your disposal.

- Once you have completed all lessons, you will have access to a completion quiz to help prepare you for the badge exam.
- There is no limit on the number of times you can access the completion quiz, we recommend you repeat the exercise until you have achieved at least 75%.
- A certificate of completion will be available if you meet or surpass the 75% threshold in the completion quiz.

Certification requirements
You will achieve your full Certified Professional in EnergyTM (CPE) and/or Certified Professional in CarbonTM (CPC) certification after you have:
- Obtained all the required badges (in a 5 year time frame).
- Successfully completed an experience assessment.
- Accepted our Code of Ethics, Code of Professional Conduct and our Disciplinary procedures.
- Registered for the CEP Certification Scheme.
