CEP Continuing Professional Development

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Overview

CEP provides competence certification within a framework that encompasses general competence across energy, carbon and sustainability, as well as specialist, expert-level endorsements in a range of associated disciplines.

Holders of CEP certifications commit to maintaining the currency of their skills and knowledge, which includes a commitment to participation CEP’s CPD scheme. This provides reassurance to the market that a CEP certification is a mark of quality and that holders are professional, knowledgeable and capable.

CPD principles

Continuing professional development underpins professionalism and is essential to maintaining competence.

The onus is on the certificate holder to meet or exceed their CPD requirements and to demonstrate progress and achievements. Certification by CEP includes direct accountability for ongoing professional development and is a condition of maintaining certification.

There is no upper limit to CPD, and certification holders are encouraged to be proactive and forward-looking in their approach to developing their competence.

Basic CPD structure requirements

To maintain currency, for each credential you must have:

  • A total of 120 relevant CPD points over a rolling three-year period; and
  • A minimum of 20 relevant CPD points in each year.

Individuals holding multiple CEP certifications or endorsements must maintain a CPD record for each certification and endorsement.

CPD points allocation

Qualifying CPD activities carry a specific number of points or use conversion factors to translate time-based activities into points.

Activities cannot be double counted across CPD categories. For example, preparing course materials cannot be counted as both Authorship (Category F) and Course preparation and delivery (Category G).

A single CPD activity may be applied to all relevant certifications. For example, an 8-point conference attendance may be applied to both CPE and CPC certifications, provided the content is relevant to each.
