Mō te tūranga | What you’ll be doing
This is an exciting opportunity to join our excellent Wholesale Operations team in a role that beautifully combines two key functions:
- Electricity Trader: Monitor and adjust trading as market conditions change.
- Generation Controller: You’ll be responsible for remotely managing and dispatching Meridian’s portfolio of hydro and wind energy generation assets across Aotearoa, New Zealand.
You’ll collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure our plant operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations, helping us achieve our energy trading and revenue targets. Additionally, you’ll provide our Energy Trading Team with valuable advice, identify potential problem areas, and offer thoughtful solutions.
Please note, this role can be based at our Wellington, Christchurch or Twizel offices.
Our Generation Controller function operates 24/7, including weekends and overnight hours. This means a typical roster looks like this:
- Rotating 12-hour shifts between 6am and 6pm:
- X2 – day shifts – 6am to 6pm
- X2 – night shifts – 6pm to 6am
- X4 – days off.

Ngā pukenga kei a koe mō tenei tūranga | What you’ll bring
With a trade or tertiary qualification, or relevant plant operation/system control experience, you’ll be able to monitor large amounts of information with great attention to detail while keeping an eye on the bigger picture. You’ll need strong computer skills and basic math accuracy for numerical tasks.
This role involves shift work, where you’ll take sole charge of our generation control desk, requiring you to think and respond under pressure. When not on shifts, you’ll collaborate on projects and tasks that support the team.
